How To Add Medical ID Information To iPhone or Android

At The Kurt Caselli Foundation, championing rider safety is at our core. As such, we think every rider's toolkit should include the Emergency Contact Helmet Sticker and have your Medical ID feature enabled on your phone. Whether you're racing, hitting the trails, or mastering the track, ensuring first responders have instant access to vital information in critical moments is crucial.

Remember, the idea of the Medical ID feature is to make critical medical information available to first responders or anyone else who might need it in an emergency situation. Consider carefully which information you want to be publicly accessible from your lock screen.

To set up or add your Medical ID on an iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Health App: This is the app with a white icon that has a pink heart.

  2. Tap on your Profile Picture: On iOS 13 and later, you'll find your profile picture or icon in the top-right corner of the screen. On earlier versions of iOS, tap "Medical ID" at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Tap on "Medical ID": This will take you to the Medical ID setup.

  4. Tap "Edit": Located usually at the top-right corner.

  5. Fill in Your Information: You can add various details like:

    • Name

    • Date of birth

    • Medical conditions

    • Medical notes

    • Allergies & reactions

    • Medications

    • Emergency contacts

    • Blood type

    • Organ donor status

    • Weight and height

  6. Enable "Show When Locked": This ensures that your Medical ID can be accessed even when your phone is locked, which can be crucial in emergencies.

  7. Tap "Done": Once you've entered all your desired information.

Your Medical ID is now set up and can be accessed from the lock screen by tapping "Emergency" and then "Medical ID."

To set up or add your Medical ID on an Android, follow these steps:

Adding Medical ID information on Android varies slightly depending on the brand of the phone and the version of Android. However, most Android devices offer a similar feature through the emergency information settings. Here's a general step-by-step guide on how to add Medical ID information to your Android device:

  1. Unlock your Android Device: Start at your home screen.

  2. Open the Settings App: This is typically represented by a gear icon.

  3. Search for Emergency Information: Depending on your version and brand, you might find it under:

    • About phone > Emergency information, or

    • Users & accounts > Emergency information.

  4. Enter the Emergency Information Page: Once you've found the emergency information setting, tap on it.

  5. Edit or Add Information:

    • Tap on "Edit" or the pencil/edit icon.

    • You'll have fields to input medical details such as allergies, medications, blood type, and any other medical notes.

    • You can also add emergency contacts. This will typically pull from contacts you've saved in your phone's Contacts app.

  6. Save the Information: Once you've entered all the necessary details, make sure to save or confirm the input, if required.

  7. Test the Setup: Lock your phone. On the lock screen, there should be an "Emergency" option. Tap on it, and you should be able to view your emergency information without unlocking the phone. This ensures that first responders can see your medical information even if your phone is locked.

Revisit your emergency details periodically and update them if there are changes in your medical condition, medications, or emergency contact numbers.
